Externally positioned expansion joint waterstops are used where joints are designed as expansion joints due to anticipated restraint forces and stresses within the structure and where the use of internally positioned expansion joint waterstops is not feasible. In addition to preventing water ingress, they also accommodate movement and settlement. For increased load requirements, both internally and externally positioned expansion joint waterstops are typically installed in combination.
